What is ELTC?

The expanding role of English as the language of international communication demands more efficient and effective English language teaching at all levels. In response to this need, the Malaysian Cabinet gave its approval for the establishment of an institution that would assume the function of enhancing the teaching competencies of English language teachers.

On 1 June 2002, the English Language Teaching Centre, Malaysia (ELTC) was established to undertake this specialist function. ELTC is one of the institutions of the Teacher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. A task force of ten senior lecturers was entrusted with the responsibility of establishing the initial infrastructure facilities and professional direction of the Centre. Dr Rabiah Ghani was appointed as the first Director of ELTC on 1 December 2002. A deputy Director and the Heads of the seven departments of the Centre were also appointed at this time.

ELTC aims to be the preeminent centre in the region for the training of English language teaching professionals. The Centre will develop innovative English Language Teaching (ELT) programmes that will be benchmarked against international standards. These programmes will train in-service ELT professionals in the use of ELT best practices that have been developed and validated through research. ELTC will also play a significant role in the development of ELT policy and initiatives in the country, and will provide consultancies that will assist in promoting the development of ELT in the region.

Vision
To be a leader in English language teaching

Mission
To impact English language teaching practices through informed research, quality training and classroom innovations

Main Functions
To develop innovative methods and approaches for the teaching of English

Joke #1

Mother Superior's Last WordsIn a convent in Ireland, the 98-year-old Mother Superior lay dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her last journey comfortable. They tried giving her warm milk to drink but she refused it. One of the nuns took the glass back to the kitchen. Then, remembering a bottle of Irish Whiskey that had been received as a gift the previous Christmas, she opened it and poured a generous amount into the warm milk. Back at Mother Superior's bed, they held the glass to her lips. The frail nun drank a little, then a little more and before they knew it, she had finished the whole glass down to the last drop. As her eyes brightened, the nuns thought it would be a good opportunity to have one last talk with their Spiritual Leader."Mother," the nuns asked earnestly, "Please give us some of your wisdom before you leave us." She raised herself up in bed on one elbow, looked at them and said:"Don't sell that cow."
